Stretchmarks

Stretchmarks occur when the skin undergoes excessive stretching resulting in tears and scarring in the mid section of the skin called the dermis.

Commonly it appears during pregnancy on the abdomen as reddish lines called striae gravidarum. With time, the lines gets depressed and appears whitish. These lines do seem to be common in women who have their babies at an earlier age.

Persons who are obese or patients who suffer from hormonal disorders resulting in obesity (eg. Cushing's Syndrome) are also prone to stretchmarks on the abdomen but also on their arms and thighs.
Other factors apart from hormones will be genetics, diet and exercise.

 Fractional Laser resurfacing has been found to improve the condition.
