Melasma

Melasma (also known as Chloasma) is a huge problem for many women resulting in varying degrees of dark patches on the cheeks, forehead and temple areas usually symmetrically.

We do not really understand all the reasons why so many women suffer from this condition but age, genetics, hormonal factors and exposure to the sun are important factors. The condition usually start in 3rd or 4th decade of life and may be triggered by pregnancy, oral contraceptives, sun exposure and certain phototoxic reaction brought on by cosmetics, soaps or toiletries. Many factors remain unknown.

Asian and darker skinned races are more prone to this condition which often affects women but also men to a lesser degree resulting in both cosmetic and psychological consequences.

There are very effective treatments available but the combination treatments including the right regime using pigment lasers, lightening creams, oral medications, sun blocks and exfoliation are best. The treatment of underlying hormonal factors are also important.
